No One Owns Our Ancestors
No one owns our ancestors or the uncopyrightable facts about them, such as their names, dates and places of birth, marriage, and death. However, polite genealogists acknowledge and give credit to those who have been kind enough to share research information.
Only the Living Have Rights
Laws concerning dead persons do not give them rights, but are about protecting, guiding or punishing living persons. The dead have no rights; the living do. The dead are due a measure of respect.
Although it is usually acceptable to privately share some information about living people, no information other than a living person's name should be placed online without their permission.
