They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. --Laurence Binyon,"Ode of Remembrance"

I have gathered a posie of other men's flowers, and nothing but the string that binds them is mine own. --Michel Eyquem de Montaigne

Documenting your family history is a lifelong pursuit, a task of pleasure and research that is never completely finished.

Not to know one's ancestors, is to be a tree without roots, a stream without a source. --Kung-fut-se

The wind whispers through the trees, recalling words and dreams and memories of those who left us long ago. --Unknown

St. Basil of Caesarea, born about 330 A.D., said, "A tree is known by its fruit; a man by his deeds. A good deed is never lost; he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love."

Martha Jeanette Rowell
Farmer and Genealogist

Spouse(s): Charles Hershel Roll: Not related to our Roll family
Family tree: Martha Jeanette Rowell 1944-2013

Biography

Martha Jeanette Rowell (Mrs. Charles Hershel Roll) was a farm owner in Hollow Rock, Tennessee, and co-author with Thelma Lynn Roll of the Genealogy of the New Jersey Rolls.

The "Pennsylvania Rolls" and the "New Jersey Rolls" Not Related

Martha believed that her second husband, Charles Hershell Roll, was related to the "New Jersey Rolls:" he was not. Charles was a descendant of another Roll family, the "Pennsylvania Rolls."

A Note from Martha Roll

The Genealogy of the New Jersey Rolls has been credited to Lynn Roll Kennedy and me. Lynn and I started the research, but Janis Roll Holland got in with us very early. The three of us worked together for nearly 20 years. We did a record swap with Evelyn Norweb (Her Roll Connection was that her sister, Charlotte Ann Lohmiller, married Robert Louis Roll and she was doing the research for her niece and nephew.), Charlotte Giltner, and Marguerite Roll. For several years, we all worked together.

Hansel Lee Haycox' Edition

We do not have the original 1984 edition of the Genealogy of the New Jersey Rolls, and the reason is given in the introduction to Hansel L Haycox's revised edition.

This genealogy was prepared primarily from data contained in The Genealogy of the New Jersey Rolls which was prepared by Martha Roll of Hollow Rock, Tennessee, and Thelma Lynn Roll of Huntington, Indiana. The copy I worked from was dated 1984 and had been presented to the Ancestral Trails Historical Society in Vine Grove, Kentucky, and later given to the North Hardin Library in Radcliff, Kentucky, and has since disappeared. The title page of the volume is reproduced on the [previous] page. I appreciate the work put into this genealogy, and have made every effort to keep the data as accurate as possible. In some cases, this has meant making changes to or adding data to the material prepared by Martha and Thelma.
