Biography

When Lyle Charles Roll was born on September 13, 1907, in Easton, Illinois, his father, Sidney, was 41 and his mother, Maggie, was 37. He was married twice. He died on September 4, 1984, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at the age of 76, and was buried in Battle Creek, Michigan.

Mr. Roll has had vast experience in every area of marketing and the management of Kellogg Company. During the first twenty-two years of his business career, his work took him from coast to coast and to every province in Canada.

He served as Sales manager and Assistant General Manager of Kellogg Company of Canada, Limited prior to September 1, 1949 when he was called back to Battle Creek to be Assistant to the President. In October of the same year he was elected to the Board of Directors of Kellogg Company. He became a member of the Executive Committee in 1951, Vice President in 1952 and Executive Vice President in 1953. Four years later, he was appointed President and General Manager. In 1962, he was designated as Chairman of the Board as well as President and General Manager.

In 1968, he relinquished the title of President and, as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, continued to concentrate on the broader aspects of Kellogg Company's worldwide operations. He was named Chairman of the Executive Committee in 1972, Vice Chairman of the Board in August of 1973, and Chairman Emeritus in January of 1979.

In addition to being a Director and a member of the Executive Committee of Kellogg Company, Mr. Roll is a Director of the J. M. Smucker Company, a Trustee of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Trust and a Trustee and a member of the Finance Committee of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.

In April of this year, he retired from the Board of the Bankers Life Insurance Company of Des Moines, Iowa and Consumers Power Company of Jackson, Michigan, having served as a Director of those companies for twelve and seventeen years, respectively.

In prior years he also served as a Director of the Nutrition Foundation, Inc. and Grocery Manufacturers of America, Inc. and as a Trustee of The Food and Drug Law Institute and The Nutrition Foundation, Inc. He is now Trustee Emeritus of Illinois Wesleyan University.
